While System Shock 2 was lauded by critics for its oppressively terrifying atmosphere and frightening visuals, its lasting appeal came from the robust role-playing game elements that helped pave the way for Irrational's own BioShock (a game that is often referred to as the "spiritual successor" to SS2). Unlike HAL of "2001: A Space Odyssey," the most terrifying part of SHODAN's existence was the fact that she actually knew the difference between right and wrong and good and evil - yet chose to do whatever was necessary to keep herself alive. Although SHODAN was also in the original game, she made the sequel a much more unpleasant experience, as players were never really sure if she was truly helping them along or just leading them further into her diabolical trap. systems in the history of rogue A.I.-dom (trust us, it's a storied history).
